In ancient times, when King Mandhata was performing penance on the banks of the Narmada, a bear started chewing his foot. The king was not afraid nor angry at the bear, but he sincerely remembered Lord Vishnu. Hearing their pitiful cries, the god immediately appeared and killed the bear with his chakra, saving the king's life.

The king was very sad because the foot was eaten by the bear. Lord Vishnu then consoled him and told him that it was the fruit of his sins of his previous birth. The Lord advised the king to go to Mathura and observe the fast of Varuthini Ekadashi and worship the boar incarnation. He promised that this merit would make the king's body beautiful again.
