On the occasion of the Bengali New Year, people pray to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi for happiness and prosperity at home. The Pohela Boishakh celebration starts with observing the sunrise and embarking on the Prabhat Pheri. In this celebration, women dress up in white saris (Garad) with red borders, along with gold jewellery. Men dress in white kurta-dhotis. The most exquisite rangoli is drawn inside the house, and rice, fish, and sweets form the menu for the morning meal. People also recite traditional songs and greet each other by saying ‘Shubho Nobo Borsho’.
