Pohela Boishakh 2026: Significance
On the occasion of the Bengali New Year, people pray to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi for happiness and prosperity at home. This day is highly sacred for making new resolutions and clearing old debts. Everyone dresses up in new clothes and goes to the temple, greeting one another with Shubh Nabo Barso. In other regions of India, it is celebrated with equal zeal by giving it various names such as Puthandu, Vishu, and Baisakhi.

Pohela Boishakh 2026: Rituals
The Pohela Boishakh celebration starts with observing the sunrise and embarking on the Prabhat Pheri. In this celebration, women dress up in white saris (Garad) with red borders, along with gold jewellery. Men dress in white kurta-dhotis. The most exquisite rangoli is drawn inside the house, and rice, fish, and sweets form the menu for the morning meal. People also recite traditional songs and greet each other by saying ‘Shubho Nobo Borsho’.
