Vishu festival is celebrated with utmost enthusiasm in Kerala. It is considered an occasion that marks new beginnings, prosperity, and luck. People believe that being able to see the Vishukani at the beginning of the year guarantees a happy year ahead. This festival unites families and motivates them to infuse new energy and positivity in their lives through worshipping Lord Krishna.

Vishu 2026: Vishukkani Rituals
The main ritual performed during the Vishu festival is Vishukani, which is prepared on the night before the festival. The seniors of the family decorate a brass pot called ‘odu’ with items such as rice, fresh fruits, vegetables, gold coins, a mirror, and yellow flowers named ‘kannikkona’.

The family members get up early in the morning with their eyes closed and first visit this ritual, with an expectation that the coming year will be prosperous for them. The second ritual involves worshipping Lord Krishna and the elders gift Vishukainitam (money or coins) to their children as a blessing. In the evening, the whole family gather to eat delicious meals and payasam, which is known as Vishu Sadya.
