The United States will begin enforcing a sweeping maritime blockade of vessels entering or exiting Iranian ports from April 13, escalating tensions after high-stakes talks between Washington and Tehran failed to yield agreement on key issues, including Iran's nuclear programme. This means all the entries and exits to the critical point will be blocked from April 13. In Indian timings, the blockade will come into effect at 7:30 pm today. The bizarre announcement from the Trump administration came at a time when the world, including India, is reeling under the worst-ever energy crisis.

What did CENTCOM announce on Hormuz?

The move, announced by US Central Command (CENTCOM), follows a presidential directive and will target "all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports", including those along the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.

It said the vessels, irrespective of countries, will remain in the region. As of now, Iran is giving safe passage to some vessels which have friendly ties with Tehran. However, with the latest move, all vessels taking the narrow route will be blocked.

"The blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations," CENTCOM said, adding that US forces would not impede ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports. The blockade would begin at 7.30 pm IST on Monday, as per a CENTCOM release.

Commercial mariners have been advised to monitor official navigation warnings and remain in contact with US naval forces while operating in the region.

Why did Trump come up with a bizarre plan to block Hormuz?

 The announcement came hours after US President Donald Trump declared that negotiations with Iran had stalled over its nuclear ambitions, despite progress on other fronts. The latest announcement from Trump as move to pressure countries to force Iran into the peace deal on US terms. As of now, no countries have come out in support of Trump, saying he did not consult before waging a war against Iran.

What could be the impact of Hormuz blockade on India?

1. The US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, announced by Trump, will prevent Indian ships from entering or exiting the Persian Gulf.

2. This will create a serious energy crisis for India as oil supplies are badly affected.

3. Trump wants countries like India to help by clearing mines and defending the strait against Iran.

4. Joining the US would put Indian forces in direct danger from Iranian missiles, drones, kamikaze boats and mines.

5. India wants to stay out of the conflict, but if the energy crisis worsens and affects daily life, Delhi may be forced to join the Americans and become part of the war.
