Huawei is preparing to unveil a new foldable, the Pura X Max, in China later this month, and from what’s been teased so far, it doesn’t follow the usual foldable playbook. Instead of going with the tall, narrow design most brands have stuck to, Huawei is trying a wider format that looks closer to a compact tablet when unfolded. It’s a noticeable shift, especially at a time when competitors like Apple and Samsung are still only rumoured to be exploring similar ideas.

The Pura X Max will launch on April 20 alongside the Huawei Pura 90 and Pura 90 Pro Max. Pre-orders have already gone live through the company’s official store, giving an early look at the configurations. Buyers will have multiple options to choose from, starting at 12GB RAM with 256GB storage, going up to 12GB + 512GB, and then higher-end 16GB + 512GB and 16GB + 1TB Collector’s Edition variants.
Huawei is also offering a fairly wide mix of colours this time. The lineup includes Interstellar Blue, Olive Gold, Phantom Night Black, Vibrant Orange, and Zero Degree White, which suggests the company is trying to balance both bold and more understated finishes.
Design is clearly where Huawei is putting its focus. The wider foldable layout could make everyday use feel more practical, especially for things like watching videos, browsing, or running multiple apps side by side. The early leaks have confirmed that the internal screen will measure around 7.6 to 7.69 inches, whereas the external screen will come in around 5.5 inches, making it usable even when folded up.
In terms of the physical components used, it uses a triple-lens camera system located on the back horizontally. In addition, there will also be punch-hole selfies on both the internal and external screens. The flat design and improved hinge also signal good build quality.

As for its technical specifications, the Pura X Max smartphone might use the Kirin 9030 chipset. However, the full specs are not officially known since Huawei has kept them a secret. There has been no information about pricing as well. More importantly, the exact availability of this smartphone beyond China is not known either. For now, the focus seems to be on introducing a different take on foldables rather than just iterating on existing designs.
