There is some news from Rockstar Games, the maker of the GTA series and most importantly GTA 6, and this might not ring well with its fans. The firm has suffered yet another data breach, and now the group of hackers is asking for ransom, and the failure to provide it will lead to the leak of breached material, the group of hackers has warned. The game maker, while confirming the instance, has said that the hack has “no impact on our organisation or our players.”

The Rockstar Games data was breached by a group that goes by the name "ShinyHunters", as was first reported by Cybersec Guru. The group has claimed that they exploited the game makers' data via Anodot, a third-party analytics service that Rockstar uses to track cloud costs. Although the developer's own repository was not exploited in this case. ShinyHunters, the group responsible for the breach, has given a timeline by which the ransom needs to be paid, failing which it would leak Rockstar's data. The group has reportedly said, "Pay or leak", adding further, “This is a final warning to reach out by April 14, 2026, before we leak, along with several annoying digital problems that will come your way. Make the right decision; don't be the next headline.”

Although Rockstar has affirmed that the leaked data comprised “non-material company information” and would have no impact on players. Rockstar's spokesperson, while addressing the press, said, “We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. ”.

Not A First For ShinyHunters

This is not the first time the notorious firm has targeted a big entity; previously the group has been involved in targeting firms such as AT&T, Microsoft, Wattpad, Cisco and Ticketmaster. Latest reports suggest that the data breach includes Rockstar's financial information from GTA Online and Red Dead Online; it also consists of player spending and geographical data, contacts, and marketing timelines.

Is Rockstar's game a usual target?

Rockstar Games has been on hackers' radars for quite some time now, and this incident is no isolated one. In 2022 as well, major data was internally leaked, and it contained things like development gameplay footage from the upcoming GTA 6. This leak lifted the curtains off the two dual protagonists that we are familiar with right now, Lucia and Jason, and this leak started showing up on a popular GTA forum. The breach was carried out by British teenager Arion Kurtaj, who managed to tap into Rockstar’s internal systems from a hotel room in Oxfordshire, UK. Using social engineering tactics, he and his group extracted sensitive source code along with early GTA 6 gameplay clips.

In a separate episode, the game’s first official trailer surfaced online in December 2023 before its planned debut, pushing Rockstar to release it sooner than intended. Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently slated to arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X on November 19, 2026.
