The KVS Admission Process: The admission process for Class 1 at Kendriya Vidyalaya is currently underway. The first provisional list was released on April 9, 2026; now, if any seats remain vacant, a second provisional list will be issued. This second provisional list is expected to be released on April 16. Millions of parents, who have been waiting in line to secure admission for their children at Kendriya Vidyalaya, are eagerly awaiting this second provisional list. If seats remain vacant, a third provisional list will be released on April 21.

However, very few parents may be aware that there is, in fact, another way to get a child admitted to a KV- a method involving very low competition and a significantly higher probability of securing a seat.

Every year, Kendriya Vidyalaya receives hundreds of thousands of applications for Class 1 admissions. Approximately 12 to 20 lakh parents attempt to get their children admitted to a KV. However, admissions are limited to just 40 seats per section. If a school has two sections, the total number of admissions is capped at 80 seats. Consequently, securing admission to Class 1 at a KV is generally regarded as a very difficult undertaking.

What is the Easier Way to Secure Admission at Kendriya Vidyalaya?

If you wish to get your child admitted to a Kendriya Vidyalaya, you should begin preparing for it well in advance. This is because admission to the 'Balvatika' (pre-primary) section is considered a far easier route to securing a spot in a Kendriya Vidyalaya compared to admission in Class 1. There are several reasons for this, including lower competition, automatic promotion to the next class, and less pressure regarding seat availability.

KVS Admission 2026-27: Lower Competition

Every year, between 15 to 20 lakhs parents fill out KV application forms for Class 1, whereas the number of applications for Balvatika ranges from 200,000 to 300,000- a significantly lower figure. While 200 to 500 students compete for a single seat in Class 1, only 20 to 50 students vie for a seat in Balvatika.

KVS Admission 2026-27: Automatic Promotion

Children admitted to Balvatika are automatically promoted to the next class. They do not need to rely on the lottery system to secure admission to Class 1. Furthermore, they remain unaffected by the scarcity of seats typically observed during Class 1 admissions.

KVS Admission 2026-27: Greater Seat Availability

Securing admission to Balvatika is considerably easier than gaining admission to Class 1. This is because seat availability is not as critical a factor at this stage as it is for Class 1. Balvatika admissions feature a full quota of 40 seats, whereas Class 1 admissions are granted only for the seats that remain vacant after accommodating students promoted from Balvatika. Consequently, the number of seats available in Class 1 can be limited; however, the probability of securing a seat in Balvatika is nearly 100 per cent.

KVS Balvatika 202: A New Initiative:

Balvatika was recently introduced under the New Education Policy (NEP 2020). For this reason, not many people are currently aware of this easier pathway to admission in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs). Most people still believe that admission to a Kendriya Vidyalaya can only be secured through Class 1. Consequently, the competition for admission in this category is currently quite low.

KVS Balvatika Age Criteria:

A specific age criterion has been established for admission to Kendriya Vidyalaya Balvatika. Admission is not open to everyone; parents may fill out the KV Balvatika application form only if their child is between the ages of 3 and 5 years.

Balvatika-1 (Nursery) – The child must be older than 3 years but younger than 4 years.

Balvatika-2 (LKG) – The child must be older than 4 years but younger than 5 years.

Balvatika-3 (UKG) — Older than 5 years but younger than 6 years.

It is important to note that, just like for Class 1, applications for Balvatika must be submitted online within the stipulated timeframe by visiting the official website of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) at https://admission.kvs.gov.in.

However, in some Kendriya Vidyalayas, if seats remain vacant even after multiple rounds (which is a rare occurrence), offline application forms are also issued.

Parents must visit the school in person to inquire about such possibilities. Once the application process is complete, admission is granted through a lottery system similar to that of Class 1. If a child's name is selected, parents are required to visit the school for the verification of original documents.
