The body of a migrant worker from Jharkhand’s Giridih district, who was was reportedly killed in an alleged crossfire between police and criminals in Saudi Arabia in October last year, arrived at Ranchi airport on Sunday. However, his family refused to accept the body, demanding compensation from his employer before performing the last rites, officials said.
According to Shikha Lakra, team leader of the state migrant control cell, the family of the victim, Vijay Kumar Mahato, has sought compensation from the private company where he was employed in Saudi Arabia before taking custody of the body.
Lakra said that since the death involved a bullet injury, the matter is currently under consideration before a court in Jeddah. “The final compensation may depend on the court’s decision,” PTI quoted Shikha Lakra.
She added that the Indian Embassy had informed the state authorities about the arrival of the body, and coordination was carried out with the district administration. “Our role is limited to coordination in cases involving overseas employers and matters under foreign jurisdiction,” Lakra said.
