A sleeper coach bus travelling from Noida to Bihar’s Darbhanga lost control and overturned near Milestone 76 of the Yamuna Expressway in Nauhjheel on Sunday evening.

The bus, carrying 70 passengers, met with an accident at 7:30 pm. The accident caused panic among the passengers inside, while the traffic on the highway was disrupted.

The double-decker sleeper coach bus was occupied mostly by migrant workers. The scene was chaotic as highway traffic came to a halt. Passengers were trapped between seats and sleeper berths. Nearby villagers rushed to the accident site after hearing the children and women screaming.

The villagers alerted the UP Dial 112 police. Authorities were alarmed. Police from several police stations and six 108 ambulances rushed to the scene.

With their help, police broke the windows and evacuated the trapped passengers. Forty passengers were injured in the accident. Ten of them were in serious condition and were referred to a higher centre.

Police removed the damaged bus from the highway with the help of a crane and restored traffic within an hour. The driver and conductor absconded after the accident. According to a report by Jagran.com, the driver was believed to be consuming alcohol from a bottle, which caused the bus to go out of control.

Nauhjheel police station in-charge Sonu Kumar said that preliminary investigations indicate that speeding and the driver's loss of control were the causes of the accident. The driver and conductor are being searched for.

The victims have been identified as Neelam, Parvati, Anjali, Ayush, Sapna, Soni, Monica, Shanti Kumari, Subhash, Radhika, Sita, Gayatri, Santoshi, Anita, Pinky, Vaishnavi Sojan, Ramkripal Jha, Sachin, Rohit, Surendra Rai, Sunil of Madhubani, Aarti, Reena, Savitri of Muzaffarpur, Ruby, Ritu, Jayanti, Sonu, Kunwar Kumar, Braj Kumar etc. residents of Purnia have been injured.
