A dramatic encounter between a teenager and a leopard unfolded in Uttar Pradesh's Shravasti district on Tuesday, leaving the boy seriously injured and the wild animal dead.

The incident occurred in the Sirsiya region when a leopard concealed within an orchard bordering the roadside suddenly attacked a 16-year-old boy. The teenager reportedly fought off the leopard for nearly 30 minutes until villagers arrived to his rescue.

According to reports, the victim, Ghulam, a resident of Saipurwa village in the Kuthni area, is a cotton candy vendor. He was returning home around 11 am on Tuesday, after selling his goods near the entrance of the Baba Vibhutinath Shiva Temple.

The leopard was allegedly hiding inside a garden by the roadside between the temple and Saipurwa village, jumped from where and pounced upon him.

The boy, though in sudden attack, put up resistance and kept shouting for help. The struggle continued between the teenager and the animal for almost half an hour.

Hearing the cries for help, people from the nearby area gathered at the spot. As they found a crowd coming towards, the animal moved away into an adjacent field but died at a little distance.

Teenager Suffers Deep Injury

Ghulam sustained a severe injury just above his right eye, resulting in excessive bleeding. He was rushed to the Sirsiya Community Health Centre and received first aid. He was later referred to the Joint District Hospital in Bhinga and from there to the Medical College, Bahraich, for better treatment.

Leopard Found Dead in Field

Following the attack, police and forest department officials reached the spot after being notified about the same. Station House Officer Saurabh Singh and Range Officer of East Sohelwa Range Animesh Verma were among the officials at the spot. About two-and-a-half hours later, forest department officials recovered the carcass of the leopard from an adjacent field.

Circle Officer Bharat Paswan visited the spot with the forest department and police. The body of the leopard was sent to the office of the East Sohelwa Range for a post-mortem examination. Range Officer Animesh Verma said the leopard died during the rescue operation, and it is suspected to have been three years old. The precise reason for its death is pending the post-mortem report. The forest department has been notified.
