As the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise concludes, around 5.18 crore names have been deleted from electoral rolls across 12 states and Union Territories. According to Election Commission data cited by news agency PTI, nearly 60 lakh names of deceased voters were removed as part of the ongoing clean-up of voter lists.
After completion of the second phase, the total number of electors now stands at 45.81 crore, reflecting a 10.2 per cent reduction in the rolls.
Official data shows that 66,88,636 deceased electors were removed in total. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest deletions with 25.47 lakh names of deceased voters removed, followed by West Bengal, where 24.16 lakh such entries were deleted.
With the publication of the final electoral roll for Uttar Pradesh on Friday, the second phase of the SIR exercise has now been completed.

This phase covered Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa.
The remaining approximately 40 crore electors will be covered in the third phase, which will span 17 states and five Union Territories. These include Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Ladakh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana and Uttarakhand.
When Will Phase 3 Start?
The third and final phase of the exercise is expected to begin after assembly elections conclude in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry.
While Assam, Kerala and Puducherry voted on April 9 and reported strong turnout, Tamil Nadu will go to the polls in a single phase on April 23. West Bengal will vote in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Counting of votes and declaration of results for all five states is scheduled for May 4.
