The voting for the Assam Assembly election was conducted on April 9, and the results are scheduled to be announced on May 4. The northeastern state recorded its highest voter turnout at 85.91 per cent with chances of a further increase in the final count. While the BJP stated that the people have shown faith in the current government, the Congress asserted that the higher turnout suggests that the voters sought a change.

While pre-poll surveys predict a victory for the NDA, any turnaround will not affect only the BJP but also the ambitions of Himanta Biswa Sarma. The chief minister of Assam has established himself as the biggest face of the party in the whole northeastern region in recent years.

Sarma is known for his aggressive stands on several issues, including the UCC and illegal immigrants. Along with putting a question mark on his style, a potential loss will also dent his efforts to establish himself as the national leader.

Along with Sarma's reputation, a potential loss will also damage the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of establishing the northeast as the pillar of India's future growth. The current central government has invested heavily in several projects, including the Bogibeel Bridge, railway connections, and regional airport expansions.

A potential loss of the BJP will also signal a "disconnect" between the center's developmental push and the total issues. Gaurav Gogoi, Congress candidate for the chief minister post, has stated that the current government in Assam is being operated from Delhi.

He further stated that the Congress will ensure that the power remains in the hands of the locals. However, the pre-poll surveys have indicated that the BJP is set to repeat its government in the northeastern state. The results will be announced on May 4, along with the results of four other states.
