The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to undertake a comprehensive mid-life refurbishment programme for its Blue Line trains, the oldest trains, to enhance passenger experience and safety.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the DMRC said that the initiative targets the earliest rolling stock trains, called RS-1. These trains were introduced between 2002 and 2007, marking a near completion of two decades.
As part of the initiative, a total of 70 trains on the Blue and Red Lines will be refurbished in a phased manner to align them with the new trains and modern technological standards.
As of now, two phases with the upgradation of 12 and 18 trains, respectively, have been completed, and the third phase is underway.
According to DMRC, 22 Blue Line trains will be refurbished by November 2027.

What are the new features in trains?
The DMRC has stated that the trains will undergo aesthetic changes, including repainting of driver and passenger cabins to fix wear and tear.
Moreover, electrical panels in the coaches and the driver’s cabin will be upgraded with modern technology.
One of the significant changes that the trains will undergo is the installation of state-of-the-art IP-based Passenger Announcement and Passenger Information Systems (PA-PIS).
New CCTV cameras and LCD-based Dynamic Route Map, along with PA-PIS, will enhance passenger experience with real-time updates on stations, arrivals, and routes.
During emergencies, these systems will work more effectively for communication between operators and passengers.
Additionally, every coach in the trains will now have an advanced fire detection system, which will be equipped with heat and smoke sensors.
Miniatures, MCBs, new jumper cables, connectors, mobile and laptop charging points are other commuter-friendly upgrades that will be made in coaches.

Will operations be affected?
The DMRC is carrying out upgrades in a phase-wise manner, and hence, no major disruption is anticipated.
As two phases of work have already been done, the trains have returned to service. This indicates that the work is progressing without interruptions in operations.
Moreover, the upgrade is planned gradually till November 2027, further reducing possibility of any major disruption.
